Trauma Treatment and EMDR

Trauma is more than a single event— it is an experience that alters our sense of self and feeling of safety in the world.  At times a memory replays in our mind, leaving us feeling distant and disconnected.  At other times we may have bursts of anger, feelings of shame, or paralyzing fear.  We may find ways to numb overwhelming sensations or we may stay on constant alert, causing fatigue, anxiety, and illness.  Much of this happens unconsciously, in the background of our daily life, leaving us exhausted and confused.

At the heart of trauma is a sense of powerlessness, the consequence of being unprotected at a crucial moment in time.  Recovering from trauma involves restoring a sense of safety and building the needed capacities to process the past in new ways.  At Nurtured Self Counseling, we use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to work toward an integration of past and present, allowing for grounded, wholehearted living.  Schedule a free consultation to learn more.
